There is nothing more frustrating than switching on your air conditioning during a scorching summer afternoon only to be hit by a gust of warm, stuffy air. When your AC turns into a heater, you need answers fast.
Before you panic, some causes are surprisingly simple to fix yourself, while others require a quick call to a professional. Here are the four most common reasons your aircon is blowing warm air.
1. Incorrect Thermostat Settings
It sounds obvious, but it happens more often than you think. If someone else in the house has fiddled with the remote controller, the unit might be set to ‘Fan’ mode (which just moves room-temperature air around) or accidentally switched to ‘Heat’ mode.
- The Fix: Double-check your controller. Ensure the mode is explicitly set to ‘Cool’ (usually represented by a snowflake icon) and that the target temperature is set lower than the current room temperature.
2. Restricted Airflow (Dirty Filters)
When your internal mesh filters are heavily clogged with dust, pet hair, and debris, air cannot flow smoothly across the cooling coils. This restriction can cause the coils to freeze over completely, blocking the system and causing it to emit warm air instead of cold.
- The Fix: Open the front casing of your indoor unit, slide out the filters, and wash them under a warm tap. Let them dry completely before putting them back. Clean filters keep the air flowing and the bills low.
3. The Outdoor Unit is Blocked or Lacks Power
Your air conditioner doesn’t magically ‘create’ cold air; it takes the heat from inside your home and dumps it outside via the exterior condenser unit. If that outdoor box is choked by overgrown garden weeds, leaves, or plastic bags, it cannot release the heat. Alternatively, if the outdoor unit has tripped a circuit breaker, the indoor fan will run, but the cooling compressor outside will be dead.
- The Fix: Clear away any debris or plants surrounding your outdoor unit to leave a clear 2-foot perimeter. Also, check your home’s fuse board to ensure the AC switch hasn’t tripped.
4. Low Refrigerant (A Leak)
Refrigerant is the vital chemical fluid that cycles through the pipework to absorb and transfer heat. Because an AC system is a sealed loop, refrigerant should never run low. If it does, you have a leak. Without enough refrigerant, the system loses its ability to cool the air passing over it.
