One of the most frequent questions we hear at OJ Gas & Heating is: “I’d love underfloor heating, but will it ruin my floors?” It’s a valid concern. After all, nobody wants to invest in a luxury heating system only to have their expensive hardwood warp or their carpet act as a thermal barrier. The short answer is yes, you can install underfloor heating (UFH) under almost any floor type. However, the “how” and the “efficiency” change depending on what’s under your feet.
Here is everything you need to know about floor compatibility before you book your installation.
1. Tile, Stone, and Polished Concrete: The Gold Standard
If you are looking for the absolute best performance from your underfloor heating, look no further than masonry finishes.
Why they work: Materials like ceramic tiles, porcelain, slate, and limestone have high thermal conductivity. They heat up quickly and, more importantly, they stay warm for a long time.
The Benefit: Because these materials are so efficient at “holding” heat, your boiler doesn’t have to work as hard to maintain a steady temperature, leading to lower energy bills.
2. Engineered Wood: The Natural Choice
Many homeowners crave the warmth of wood but worry about the heat causing the boards to shrink or gap.
The Solution: At OJ Gas & Heating, we always recommend engineered wood over solid hardwood. Engineered wood is constructed in layers, making it structurally stable and far less likely to move when the temperature changes.
Top Tip: To ensure the heat can reach your room effectively, we recommend keeping the board thickness to 18mm or less.
3. Vinyl and Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT)
Vinyl has seen a huge surge in popularity (brands like Karndean and Amtico are common in UK homes). The good news is that they are fantastic partners for UFH.
Quick Warm-up: Vinyl is thin and dense, meaning you’ll feel the warmth almost immediately after turning the system on.
The Temperature Limit: Most vinyl manufacturers specify a top floor temperature of 27°C. Our smart thermostats ensure your system never exceeds this, protecting your floor’s warranty and appearance.
4. Can I Have Underfloor Heating with Carpet?
This is a common myth, many people think carpet and UFH don’t mix. You can have both, but you must pay attention to the “Tog” rating.
The 2.5 Tog Rule: For the heat to pass through to the room, the combined Tog rating of your carpet and underlay should not exceed 2.5.
The Risk: If your carpet is too thick (like a heavy shag pile), it acts as an insulator, trapping the heat underneath the floor rather than letting it warm the room.
5. What About Laminate?
Laminate is a cost-effective and highly compatible option. Most modern laminates are designed to be “UFH-ready.” Just ensure you use a high-quality, low-resistance underlay to allow for maximum heat transfer.
